I put Spottt up on my blog last Friday because I’ve seen it on a few other blogs and thought it might be a good idea to try. If it worked half as well as Entrecard for pulling in people to read then it would be worth the space. I read that I would have to wait up to 24 hours for my blog to be approved, so I waited patiently, but when Sunday afternoon rolled around I decided to start looking into the service a little more.

Since I was now looking for the banner, I noticed where most other sites had their Spottt advertisement displayed. Spottt “requires” that the banner be placed above the fold. Their specific definition is no more than 850px from the top of the page. I placed the banner within that limit but then started noticing that most sites with the Spottt banner were not displaying it within the top 850px. Right off the bat I’m disadvantaged because the way it is supposed to work is that you receive advertising on other people’s sites based on how much you in turn advertise locally. People are much more likely to look at or click on an advertisement that is placed above the fold.

On Monday they finally approved my site and started running advertisements. I was clicking through my site to get to the admin page this evening and noticed that there was a scantily clad woman on the ad. I refreshed the screen and up popped a second scantily clad woman. Now TechByPC is not specifically family oriented, but it isn’t anti-family either, and I have no intention of offending any of my guests by displaying a picture of a woman that might offend some. I went over to my wife’s blog and checked it out there as well since I had requested hers be added at the same time. Similar advertising was being shown. Well, they just lost me.

I just put spottt on my blog last night. They haven’t approved me yet and I’m getting sick of the pink box… Today, I went to their page and they were having database issues, and now it looks like I may just abandon the idea altogether. Though, I may leave it up until it gets approved so I can confirm that I really want it gone. It’s interesting how often you see it though.

I put up a vote so I can get some user feedback too.

That’s appalling to think that the spot network allows such things. Those sites, if allowed, should only be shown on sites of similarity, not on useful blogs and sites that have nothing to do with adult related content. Good thing you ditched them. I was considering using them, but this turned me right off. Thanks for sharing with us.

Interestingly, I applied to Spottt last month and after three or four days asked about my registration since I never received confirmation. I did get a response from Spottt who said they would look into it. At abut the same time I applied for an AdBrite account (Spottt is a part of AdBrite) I was approved almost immediately for AdBrite, using the same information that got me nowhere with Spottt. Spottt did follow up once more, I was still not approved. The third time they contacted me they sugested I re-register with a different email address. I have not done it yet. My site may be getting too cluttered.
No other exchange program has yet to come close to my results with Entrecard. But then I do work the system in Entrecard. I suppose, as usual, you reap what you sow.

Yes, Entrecard works very well and I didn’t expect Spottt to work as well except I hoped it would be an easy hands-off way to drive more traffic. I had about 700 impressions and 3 clicks before I cancelled, so not bad, but not great. I appreciate that Entrecard gives full control over what the advertisement looks like before it gets on my site. Of course the majority of Entrecard traffic comes through drops, not advertising. It seems that people are good about reading though. I know I’ve found some good and interesting blogs that I’ve been posting on.

    Thanks for reading!
