Dr Pepper

Dr. Pepper made good on a promise to give everyone a free Dr. Pepper when/if Guns N’ Roses finished Chinese Democracy, started in 1994. They opted to use their website to hand out free coupons for Dr. Pepper. Well, the website crashed. They extended the free Dr. Pepper through 6pm today, but even today I wasn’t patient enough to keep trying the website, so no free Dr. Pepper for me.

By crashing their website they probably saved thousands of dollars in free Dr. Pepper, but at what cost to advertising? Actually probably very little. I’m sure their website is still getting many more hits than are normal.

It’s an interesting thought though. While many businesses rely on their websites to make money, others only spend money on their website, so the more time down, the more money saved. The question was, was this an intentional oversight? I’m sure they could have hired a 3rd party to handle the registrations had they been sincerely interested in giving everyone a free Dr. Pepper.

You are right in the fact that to many companies a website is just another advertising media, I couldn’t imagine many cans of Dr Pepper being purchased via the site:)

The one major problem is companies have their site designed etc and then just put it on a server, they don’t appear to allow for spikes in traffic. If company A expects 1000 hits a day then they appear to get hosting suitable for that and forget about it, then when they have some kind of campaign they don’t increase their hosting capabilities to cater for it.

    Just my thoughts

Thanks for your thoughts. I was just over on Amazon looking at their Black Friday forums. It appears that many people there are complaining about the same thing from years past. Amazon has some of the best capacity available, yet they are susceptible as well. I can see these Black Friday sales having the same effect on web traffic. Keep people trying until it’s too late and the prices are back up. How many people will purchase anyway?
