Vista is good, but not for business I believe. Windows 7 looks good too, but I'm an IT guy and I still love windows XP, till I die (i suppose)!

I prefer XP over Vista but that is because Vista is a resource hog. On my old machine I had to reinstall XP every 6 months or so but on my new computer I've had it for over a year and it is nearly as fast as it was the day I got it. I agree with you on the format any pre-configuration machine. I hate the Trend Micro and McAfee crap they put on it.

I've never been impressed with "as shipped" configurations of Windows. The first thing I always do with a computer, whether for me, a friend, or work, is to format and reinstall it.

I am also using Vista and so far I am happy with it. I tried XP in my other PC and it is also reliable.

I use Vista too but am not too impressed with the whole Windows package that went with my laptop.

Part of what I do includes installing and uninstalling software on a regular basis to test it. At work this is many times more frequent at home. I find that some things are more detrimental than others, and on certain computers I will refuse to install certain software. VPN software for example doesn't seem to like to be installed, then uninstalled, then replaced with another product, and so on. Seems like a few iterations of that will kill a machine's performance pretty quickly.

I shiver at thought what were you doing to WinXP installs. :) My last XP installation on desktop lasted for over three years of heavy abuse and was only relieved by motherboard failure recently.
