On my old machine I had to reinstall XP every 6 months or so but on my new computer I've had it for over a year and it is nearly as fast as it was the day I got it. I agree with you on the format any pre-configuration machine. At work this is many times more frequent at home. I find that some things are more detrimental than others, and on certain computers I will refuse to install certain software. VPN software for example doesn't seem to like to be installed, then uninstalled, then replaced with another product, and so on.
