It is past time for the US to come modern with the metric or SI system. I just happened to run across a site discussing the difference between A4 and Letter. It was a really good read and explains why it is a fight every time you try to fight with reformatting in a word processor. Well this is just a soapbox snippet of a note, but I thought the link was informative and I can’t think of one reasonable reason why the US should still be on a system that everyone else has abandoned.

The SI system is much easier to work with than the mixture of units used in the US. I think most US citizens are unaware that we are alone in our use of what used to be called English units. England years ago joined continental Europe and switched ti SI units.
About 25 years ago the industry I work in (chemical propulsion) decided that we would use SI units in all publications and put US units in parentheses. It worked for awhile but gradually people began to go back to the US units. Those in charge should have rejected reports and papers for publication unless SI units were used but they did not. It was a real pain to use both units. We should have switched to SI units only, but now my industry only used US units.
